The Giants have the sixth overall choice in the draft today, but their haul of picks is not as robust as last year. With no compensatory selections, they won't choose again until No. 55.

That should leave some cash in the signing budget to make a splash on the international front for the third time in four years, with 16-year-old Dominican outfielder Wagner Mateo atop their wish list.

The Giants have scouted Mateo intensely, and sources said the club plans to make an offer when the international signing period begins July 2. Pittsburgh and St. Louis also reportedly plan to make offers.

  • The Giants will place first baseman Travis Ishikawa on the bereavement list today so he can attend funeral services for his grandfather in Southern California. Dix Ishikawa was a survivor of an internment camp in Colorado during World War II.

Although the Giants could call up a pitcher, Triple-A outfielder John Bowker is screaming for a promotion. Bowker hit a home run for the fourth consecutive day Sunday. He also had a 14-game hitting streak to raise his average to .361.

  • Pablo Sandoval, whose sore right elbow necessitated a move from third to first, told trainers that he is feeling additional tenderness in a different spot. Manager Bruce Bochy said the discomfort is mild and Sandoval could play third base or catch in a pinch.

  • Joe Martinez (skull fractures) threw 60 pitches off a bullpen mound and was pleased with his improved command and stamina. Martinez isn't expected to return from the disabled list until July.

  • Matt Cain was sent to Phoenix ahead of the team so he would get a full night's rest for tonight's start.
