GIANTS 5, BREWERS 2 at Scottsdale, Ariz. Sunday, March 1
Brewers at the plate: Milwaukee scored both of its runs in the sixth off right-hander Billy Sadler. Michael Garciaparrra singled and Chris Duffy walked before J.J. Hardy lined a two-out double off the top of the left-field fence. The Brewers had two on with nobody out in the eighth and loaded the bases with two outs but did not score.
Giants at the plate: San Francisco stranded three runners in scoring position before breaking through in the sixth on John Bowker's three-run homer off Joe Bateman. Pablo Sandoval walked and Bengie Molina blooped a single behind first base before Bowker cleared the right-field barrier with his first swing two outs later. Buster Posey lined a sacrifice fly and Jesus Guzman lashed an RBI triple in the eighth.
Brewers on the mound: Starter Dave Bush issued a pair of walks but didn't allow a hit in two scoreless innings. He threw 11 strikes in 28 pitches. Carlos Villanueva, Mitch Stetter and Omar Aguilar each contributed scoreless innings.
Giants on the mound: Tim Lincecum flashed his Cy Young form while pitching three perfect innings. He struck out two while throwing 19 strikes in 27 pitches. Jeremy Affeldt performed a nice escape act in the eighth inning, yielding a pair of singles and throwing a wild pitch before striking out Alcides Escobar, coaxing Brendan Katin's foul popup, walking Jonathan Lucroy and striking out Scott Thorman.
Cactus League records: Giants 2-3; Brewers 2-2-1
Up next: Monday, the Giants visit the Kansas City Royals, who drubbed them, 6-1, last Friday in Scottsdale. Right-hander Matt Cain will start for the Giants, who expect to use Kevin Pucetas, Jack Taschner and Brian Wilson, among others. Left fielder Dave Roberts, who hadn't played this spring until pinch-hitting Sunday, is expected to make his first appearance in the lineup.
For the Brewers, Chris Narveson and Cody Scarpetta will face the Dodgers in a "B" game Monday morning before the Brewers' "A" game in Peoria against the Padres. Jeff Suppan will make his second spring start for Milwaukee but he won't bat, because the teams agreed to play the game with American League rules. The move will allow Tony Gwynn Jr., who remains restricted from throwing because of shoulder soreness, to serve as the designated hitter for the second time in three days.
