Burriss' bat leads Giants to victory

Schierholtz clubs homer; Cain allows two runs in five innings

Giants at the plate: Shortstop Emmanuel Burriss had a big day with the bat, bunting for a single in the first inning and driving in three runs with a triple in the second. Nate Schierholtz hit a solo home run to right-center field in the third, his second long ball this spring. Rich Aurilia added an RBI double and catcher Steve Holm doubled and scored a run. Starting pitcher Matt Cain and outfielder Fred Lewis each singled and scored. Mike McBryde tripled in two runs in the ninth.


D-backs at the plate: Eric Byrnes went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Felipe Lopez doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Third baseman Mark Reynolds went 2-for-3. Chris Snyder and Josh Wilson added a base hit apiece. Outfielder Gerardo Parra made his first spring appearance since returning from playing for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic and doubled in his first at-bat.

Giants on the mound: Cain went five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking two. Justin Miller relieved Cain and pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one batter. Merkin Valdez got out of trouble after walking two batters in a scoreless seventh. Jeremy Affeldt tossed a scoreless eighth and has not allowed a run in his last three games.

D-backs on the mound: Starter Doug Davis went 2 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on five hits, but only one of the runs was earned. Davis struck out two, walked a batter and gave up a home run. Bobby Korecky relieved Davis and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless frames. Chad Qualls gave up one run on two hits in one inning of work. Jon Rauch pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and giving up one hit. Doug Slaten fired a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one batter.

Cactus League records: Giants 15-14, D-backs 8-15.

Up next: After enjoying their final scheduled spring off-day Wednesday, the Giants will resume action with their lone Cactus League night game, a 7:35 p.m. PT encounter Thursday against the Chicago Cubs at Scottsdale Stadium. Left-handers Barry Zito of the Giants and Sean Marshall of the Cubs will oppose each other. The Giants won their only other spring meeting against the Cubs, prevailing, 8-6, on March 18. ... The D-backs travel north to Surprise, where they will take on the Texas Rangers in a 6:05 p.m. MST game Wednesday. Righty Jon Garland will make the start and be followed by righty Tony Pena and lefty Travis Blackley. Right-hander Vicente Padilla gets the ball for the Rangers.
