Giants' manager doOne day after Emmanuel Burriss made two errors, Giants Manager Bruce Bochy held a closed-door mesn't want Burriss to get discouraged

Mercury News

One day after Emmanuel Burriss made two errors, Giants Manager Bruce Bochy held a closed-door meeting with the second-base candidate.

Bochy wanted to pump him up, not air him out.

"He's going to make mistakes and we'll deal with that, but we've got to make sure we're not hanging our head or tripping over our lip," Bochy said. "You'll have off days. What's important is how you handle them. He was letting it get to him."

It wasn't the first time. Burriss allowed everything to spiral two seasons ago, when he hit .165 in 36 games for High-A San Jose. It took a demotion to Low-A Augusta to reset his mind.

"I've always been hard on myself," Burriss said Sunday. "Baseball is a game of failure and I don't take failure well. The more you feel like you're going in the wrong direction, the harder it is to get yourself out."

Burriss said Bochy's talk helped and he is trying to have a different outlook this season.

"You wouldn't believe how mad I was (Saturday)," said Burriss, who is competing with Kevin Frandsen. "It caught me off guard to have a game like that, but now I'm kind of glad it happened."

  • The Giants believe in Jesus Guzman's bat, but they are seeking a safe place to put him on the field. The minor leaguer started at first base against the Angels in an 8-1 loss at Tempe.

Bochy said Guzman's bat reminds him of that of former Colorado Rockies star Vinny

  • Castilla.

"It's a loose bat and the ball carries," Bochy said. "He's got the same kind of swing with the same power to right-center field."

  • In the other split-squad game, Randy Johnson lacked pinpoint control of two-seam fastballs and splitters while issuing two walks. But he didn't allow a run in 31/3 innings of a 10-1 victory over the A's. Minor league catcher Michael Ambort hit a pinch home run, and closer Brian Wilson tossed his fourth consecutive scoreless inning.
