ROCKIES 9, GIANTS 7
at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Saturday, March 7

Giants at the plate: San Francisco remained silent until scoring three sixth-inning runs. Jesus Guzman's RBI single followed Emmanuel Burriss' leadoff walk and Edgar Renteria's single. Aaron Rowand launched a two-run double to center field. Ryan Rohlinger added a three-run homer in the ninth.Rockies at the plate: Colorado broke a scoreless tie with a five-run fourth inning. The uprising began with consecutive singles by Matt Murton, Troy Tulowitzki and Luis Gonzalez to score a run. Jonathan Herrera contributed a sacrifice fly before Clint Barmes, who went 4-for-4, slammed a bases-loaded double. Barmes and Seth Smith added hit-and-run RBI singles in a three-run sixth.

Giants on the mound: Matt Cain continued to progress, allowing three hits and striking out three in three scoreless innings. Bob Howry pitched a perfect fifth and Jeremy Affeldt worked two shutout innings. But non-roster invitee Ronnie Ray absorbed the Rockies' pounding in the fourth and Pat Misch endured the sixth, though the run-scoring hits by Barmes and Smith were grounders off infielders' gloves.

Rockies on the mound: Left-hander Franklin Morales flashed midseason form while blanking the Giants for four innings. Morales surrendered three hits and allowed just one runner to reach second base. Ryan Speier pitched a perfect fifth inning.

Cactus League records: Giants 4-7; Rockies 2-7

Up next: The Giants will play their first split-squad games of the spring Sunday. Randy Johnson will stay at home in Scottsdale to oppose the Oakland A's and fellow left-hander Dana Eveland. In Tempe, rookie right-hander Kevin Pucetas will start against the Los Angeles Angels.

Colorado will return to Tucson's Hi Corbett Field to confront the San Diego Padres. Rockies left-hander Greg Smith is scheduled to start against Padres right-hander Chris Young. The Rockies outscored the Padres in their only previous spring meeting Friday, 13-11.
