GIANTS 8, CUBS 6
at Mesa, Ariz.
Wednesday, March 18

Giants at the plate: Jesus Guzman continued his hot pace with a single in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Guzman also hit his fourth homer with one out in the seventh. Nick Noonan belted a two-out grand slam in the ninth inning to put the Giants ahead. Third baseman Pablo Sandoval had to leave the game in the fifth after taking a grounder off his face. Joey Gathright's hard-hit ball bounced off the infield dirt and hit Sandoval in the face. John Bowker added a RBI single with two outs in the sixth.

Cubs at the plate: Before a HoHoKam Park record crowd of 13,024, Alfonso Soriano led off the game with his third spring homer. Micah Hoffpauir, starting in place of Derrek Lee, sidelined with a sore right quad, hit an RBI triple and scored on Mike Fontenot's single in the first.

Giants on the mound: Opening Day starter Tim Lincecum gave up four runs on seven hits and four walks over 3 2/3 innings while striking out six. Jack Tacshner gave up one run on one hit and three walks over 1 1/3 innings.

Cubs on the mound: Ryan Dempster threw five scoreless innings in his longest outing this spring. He gave up four hits, walked one and struck out four.

Cactus League records: Giants 10-12; Cubs 10-12.

Up next: The Giants launch a two-day, home-and-home confrontation against the Chicago White Sox by hosting them at Scottsdale on Thursday. Right-hander Matt Cain will oppose lefty John Danks, repeating a regular-season Interleague matchup that unfolded last May 18 at AT&T Park. In that one, Cain held the White Sox hitless until the fifth inning but ultimately allowed four home runs in a 13-8 Giants loss. Danks surrendered three runs in six innings and received no decision. San Francisco will visit the White Sox in Glendale on Friday.

The Cubs will hit the road again, traveling to Peoria to face the Seattle Mariners. Right-hander Aaron Heilman is slated to start against Gaby Hernandez. This will be Heilman's fifth game, and fourth start. Geovany Soto should be back in camp. Soto was on Team Puerto Rico, which was eliminated from the World Baseball Classic Tuesday.
