Velez sparks Giants in Cactus win

Top prospect Pucetas tosses four solid innings

Rockies at the plate: Yorvit Torrealba had two hits, and Seth Smith and Ian Stewart each doubled.

Giants at the plate: Eugenio Velez collected three hits, including a double and a two-run triple, and Fred Lewis tripled. Pablo Sandoval had two hits. Andres Torres homered to lead off the 10th inning for the game-winning run.

Rockies on the mound: Starter Greg Reynolds gave up three runs and six hits in four innings. Juan Morillo gave up one hit and struck out one in his inning, and Manuel Corpas gave up a hit but forced a double-play grounder and faced just three batters in his inning. Josh Fogg yielded one hit in his two innings.

Giants on the mound: Right-handed prospect Kevin Pucetas gave up five hits and walked two in his four innings, but he held the Rockies to one run. Brandon Medders gave up two hits in one inning. Merkin Valdez walked one and gave up a run in one inning.

Cactus League records: Rockies 6-8, Giants 8-8.

Up next: The Rockies play host to the Mariners on Saturday at 2:10 p.m. MT. Right fielder Brad Hawpe is expected to play for the first time since suffering a lacerated pinkie finger on his left hand and taking four stitches on Feb. 27. Right-hander Jason Marquis is the starting pitcher.

The Giants have split-squad action on Saturday. Matt Cain will start against the Padres at Scottsdale, and Joe Martinez will start against the Athletics at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
