GIANTS 8, BREWERS 6
at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Monday, March 9

Giants at the plate: Eugenio Velez made his two hits count. He singled off shortstop Alcides Escobar's glove in the eighth inning to tie the score after singling, stealing second base and scoring in the fifth. Edgar Renteria collected his first Cactus League RBIs with a two-run double in the fifth inning. Juan Uribe and John Bowker hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the sixth, and Ryan Rohlinger hit a three-run walk-off homer in the ninth, giving the Giants a Major League-high 23 round-trippers.

Brewers at the plate: Casey McGehee had a big afternoon, singling to tie the score in the seventh before homering in the ninth to break another deadlock. Hernan Iribarren's two-out, run-scoring infield single in the eighth inning broke a 4-4 tie. Batting .125 entering the game, Mike Cameron went 2-for-3. Chris Duffy's two-run, second-inning double gave him a team-high seven RBIs.

Giants on the mound: Barry Zito lasted four innings, surrendering two runs and five hits. The two walks he issued in the second inning helped Milwaukee score its only runs off him. Bob Howry struck out two in two shutout innings before Merkin Valdez yielded two seventh-inning runs.

Brewers on the mound: Starter Manny Parra looked ready for the regular season, yielding one hit and striking out three in four shutout innings, before the Giants rallied for four runs against Nick Green.

Cactus League records: Giants 6-7; Brewers 5-5-1

Up next: Giants right-hander Joe Martinez will make his second Cactus League start Tuesday against the Texas Rangers in Surprise, Ariz. Martinez struggled last Thursday against the A's, allowing four runs and five hits in two innings. But the Giants remain curious about Martinez, who led the Eastern League in ERA last year. Jeremy Affeldt, Billy Sadler and Osiris Matos are scheduled to follow Martinez to the mound.

The Brewers' "A" team is off Tuesday, but Seth McClung will stay on schedule by starting a morning "B" game in Surprise against the Rangers. R.J. Swindle and Lindsay Gulin are also scheduled to pitch in the eight-inning affair, and Mat Gamel will serve as the designated hitter as he continues to work back from a shoulder injury. The team resumes Cactus League action Wednesday with a road game against the White Sox. Righty Dave Bush is scheduled to start against Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle.
